Objectives : MAUCA – Master in Astrophysics Université Côte d’Azur – is a new international Master in Astrophysics.
Each student chooses a list of METEOR (Modules Experiments ThEory Research) according to his personal interests, allowing to tune its training in two main fields : Astronomy-Astrophysics and Space Industry.
To train autonomous first-class scientists, skilled in some of the hottest topics of contemporary and future astrophysics.
To focus on research and allow students to work for two years on international research projects/instruments in astronomy and astrophysics, including science mission and spacecraft conceptual design.
To teach astrophysics using state-of-the-art ground- and space-borne instruments that will lead to major advances and discoveries in the next decade.
To use the exciting context of research in astronomy, at the junction of theory, observation, instrumentation, computing and data processing.
To provide skills that are relevant in any modern industry.
These objectives are supported by:
An interactive, participatory learning experience. MAUCA promotes problem-based and collaborative learning in close interaction with supervisors (typically 1 supervisor for 2 students).
Access to first-class experts in the fields of observation, theory, instrumentation and simulation in astronomy. All MAUCA supervisors are leading experts in their respective areas of research.
First hand-lab experience with access to complementary on-line material. Each MAUCA student is provided with a personal laptop for the two-year duration of the degree.
Freedom and flexibility in choosing courses that match student’s chosen specialization and interests. MAUCA students choose 70% of their courses.
An international and multi-cultural environment. Research knows no frontier. MAUCA students have a working experience in a Lab outside France and MAUCA is open to international students. All courses are taught in English.
Public concerned : Students
Degree Level (EU) : 7 - (EQC level or equivalent)
Admission requirements : Bachelors in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering
Duration and terms : 4 semesters
Notes : MAUCA students will become autonomous scientists skilled in some of the hottest topics of contemporary and future astrophysics.
They will benefit from an intensive and operational research-based training (70 % of MAUCA is in Lab).
They will focus on international projects/instruments/space missions of the 2015s+.
They will learn to work in close interaction with international experts of various research organisms (University and Observatory of Côte d’Azur, CNRS, CNAP) and of industry (Thales Alenia Space).
They will broaden their scientific and human experience as they spend at least 2 (and up to 7) months in a Lab outside France.
They will discover the large panel of skills required in Astrophysics and that these skills are also relevant in any modern industry.
These skills cover for instance instrumentation, optics, numerical simulations, data analysis and processing.
Partnerships with national organisations : Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur - University Côte d'Azur - Thales Alenia Space
International partnerships : Many European universities (Irlande, Italie, Grèce, Suisse)
